Episode 18 - FOOD

Political conventions over.  Few words spoken about the 17 million in this country and countless millions around the world suffering food insecurity because of Covid 19.  While personally we have more than enough food, for which I am grateful, please consider donating to food banks and programs to help others.  Now for poetry.

True Victory

I am so glad the conventions are over.

The well fed politicians made it clear

They want to engender fear

But we can choose to create a positive reality

Where all races and religions have equality,

where every one has enough to eat,

where every one can stay in their homes,

until we together this pandemic defeat.

Shopping and Food

This is going on so so long

we got more chocolate almonds.

I can tell a week has gone by,

its time to fill my vitamin supply.

Every two or three days I shave,

Its rough, but I am brave,

so Harry’s razor blade lasts 3 weeks

not the buying frequency he seeks.

Shopping patterns have changed too,

Now we can go when we feel blue

and need an outing in the car

that, by bike, would be too far.

My going alone is always a risk

as I embark with her shopping list,

It would be safer to bring dear wife,

ensuring less chance of strife.

She examines the receipt exclaiming:

what . . . $40 for tennis balls?

and heavy duty - springs?

into my memory I plunge,

realizing spg means sponge.

What about the avocados?

Are they ripe? no one knows.

Then there is the 25lb bag of flour,

seeing the size she might get dour.

Luckily we know we are partners for life

and this is minimalist domestic strife.

Soon we are laughing and I’ll take a break

from food shopping again and eat her cake,

with a good cuppa tea

and feel quite free.

Breakfast Memories

just time for a snack

before the early game

cottage cheese and marmalade

 on a multigrain.

Granny’s every day breakfast,

cottage cheese and marmalade

on an english energen roll.

I found this perfect description:

 Air filled crunchy, weightless, tasteless,

tennis ball of starch-free anti-bread

that stores indefinitely in any climate.

Maybe this explains

why Granny lived to 98.

I hope my version works

as well.

Kassandra says:

Years ago I visited club Med

today I made their chocolate bread

delighting with King Arthur sour dough starter

do you think it will make me any smarter?

BAKING NEIGHBORS

It started with a key lime pie

we had too much I cannot lie,

then Becky delivering apple pie

next came chocolate bread

among the neighbors we spread

Then Michelle came with Banana bread

enough, enough we almost said

then there appeared  bran muffin

delivered at 7 am by Corrine.

Maybe this will go and on,

until we finish the 25lb bag

and we all start to drag.

How are you feeling?

Maybe it is the idea of fish and chips

which never live up to my brit standard,

maybe it is my tennis forehand

which had a bad day today,

maybe it is the constant heat and humidity

that causes sweat to cloud my eyes,

maybe it is the violence in a few cities

that may sway people to vote with fear

but i was feeling rather down today.

Until the fish and chips arrived

and it was crispy and delicious,

until I see that the game is on again

Joe is out there pitching seriously

and hitting the lies out of the ball park.

I feel up and ready to write again!!

The cat is out of the bag,

and I won’t say any more,

For now I’ll close that door;

So please listen to my last request

In your heart find  the way

to help those needing a helping hand today.
