MAKE PEACE NOT WAR

March 06, 2022 Martin Strasmore Season 2 Episode 19
Poetry For Now
MAKE PEACE NOT WAR
Show Notes Transcript

Every day since Russia invaded Ukraine I have written something that’s help me process this awful situation; a reality that the world is facing today.  As I listened to this steel band I felt that steel can create music & pleasure or destruction and pain.  It is our choice.
The poems came day by day, starting on Saturday (February 26, 2022).  The courage of the Ukrainian people is celebrated and supported.

PROLOGUE
World war 2 started by one man
Now on the brink
Hitler and Stalin reincarnated
the same pattern.

invasion for the sake of power
destruction and killing
David and Goliath facing off
no-one wins.

Many have already died
It’s their homeland
they will not give up until
the aggressors go back.

Saturday
Standing alone on the bridge
waiting for the invaders
knowing he may die tomorrow.

21 years young
ready to defend his country
with a rifle and a helmet.

He is afraid - that is courage
willing to stand and face
an immoral unrelenting army.

This is the Baghavad Gita again,
Cousin against cousin
Righteousness and Truth
against oppression and evil

When will humanity change
So peace, compassion and respect
become everyone’s holy scripture.

Sunday
Put the sunflower seeds in your pocket
don’t put my hair in your locket
because when you die here
I won’t shed even one tear.

We Ukrainians have no fear
we would rather die fighting this duel
than live under your unjust rule.
The sunflower will grow where you die
among the bodies where your comrades lie.

You know, young man, you should  go away
you’re only here because of the dictators say
you are cannon fodder for Putin’s ego
pieces in his war game leggo

I am sorry this moment of truth
will take away your youth
because no-one wins a battle like this
for the world it is an infected cyst.

Monday
Night is falling in Kyev
Another cruel day has passed
No-one knows how this will end
the world hopes sanity will prevail.

The Russian king plays God
his finger poised for destruction.
while courageous protestors are beaten
by subservient policemen and soldiers.

Their cowardly politicians
sit back and stand down
rather than stand up
to the bare chested horse riding tyrant.

The mad megalomaniac
the new Hitler-Stalin
rolled into one brutal package
who will fall
when righteousness prevails.

How can we forget these times?
We cannot.
We can only learn to let go, to move on
because hate and anger will destroy us.

Tuesday - The European Parliament

I am crying
crying for the women and children
crying for the brave Ukrainian fighters
crying for the young Russian soldiers.
Crying for the innocent Russian People
Crying for the loss of freedom and peace

Praying for our hearts to be healed
praying for our world to be restored.

Wednesday

Here we take these things for granted
Sleeping in our comfortable beds
Fresh air flowing in the open window
Morning sun brightening my day
The clean water from the faucet
Choosing fresh food for our meals
Clean clothes to wear each day
Time to go out and play

In the Ukrainian war zone
Take nothing for granted
except for resilience, bravery,
courage and the next breath.

It is time to stop this madness.
take away the weapons
make way for food and water.
Humanity must save our earth
and support each other.

Now is the moment
to stand together for peace
sharing across the globe,
Across the artificial boundaries
we call countries.
So everyone everywhere
has food, water, education
and freedom.
